Joa Theater Company Presents the Play Bukkeo Daegari (Dried Pollack Head)

Exploring Modern Isolation and Identity Through Satire and Symbolism

The play Bukkeo Daegari will be performed for free on October 5th (Sat) at 2 PM and 6 PM, and on October 6th (Sun) at 2 PM at the Jecheon Citizens' Hall underground small theater. Admission is limited to 70 people per show on a first-come, first-served basis.

This performance is part of the 2024 Youth Artists Support Project, funded by Jecheon City and the Jecheon Cultural Foundation, providing local residents with the opportunity to enjoy high-quality theater for free.

Founded in 2015 and designated as a preliminary social enterprise by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, Joa Theater Company has produced various original works, such as Father for a Day, Longing for the Standing Seat, and Father's Diary. They also run theater education programs for youth and seniors. In addition to their original works, this performance will feature an external play to deliver a meaningful message and experience to the local audience.

Written by Lee Kang-baek, Bukkeo Daegari symbolically portrays the isolation and loss of identity felt by modern people through the story of two warehouse workers, Jaang and Giim. Giim, frustrated with his job, decides to leave, while Jaang stays behind, wondering if he, too, should have left. In the end, Jaang reflects on his life and chooses to continue living as he has.

Through the repetitive and seemingly meaningless work of the characters, the play critiques the divided, specialized lives of modern society. The title Bukkeo Daegari (Dried Pollack Head) symbolizes people who have lost their sense of direction. The play uses humor and satire to criticize the absurdities of reality while exploring themes of personal identity and the meaning of existence.

The performance is directed by Kwon Jung-hyun, with Kim Seo-woo as the stage director, Song Sung-min as the sound director, and Kim Seong-nam as the lighting director. The cast includes Seo Won-ho, Seo Ok-hwan, Lee Hye-jin, and Ko Tae-ho.
